1. Network Package Project Brief

So today we got our new project brief for the Network Package. This project I feel I'm really excited about especially after doing the Show Package design. I'm not sure I would have been as excited if we didn't do the show package first. I feel me and my group really nailed the Show Package design so we should be able to take what we learned from doing those designs and put that knowledge into this project. The network is going to be called ART Network (All Ringling Television). Not to sure how I feel about the title but I do still think it's a great topic to create an animation to. Our instructors told us to think of the "power of art". Definitely sounds intriguing.

Network Identity and Branding

The Client:
All Ringling Television Network  -on campus Comcast cable channel 117

Project Overview:
To design a Network ID and support elements to brand the new ART (All Ringling Television) Network.   The theme for the initial on-air look will be "The Power of ART"

Objective:
To create visually compelling imagery that establishes ART Network as a channel where one turns to see new and innovative content.  The Idents should illustrate the power of ART Network to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.  The Idents should capture the excitement and energy that ART Network can generate.  The imagery should be unusual and unfamiliar to the viewer to suggest the originality of the network.   It could visually explain the acronym ART as All Ringling Television Network.

Deliverables:
1  ID   7-10 seconds in length - with audio
3  Looping Animated Line Up slates -  with sample layout of informational text
1  Bug  (keyable)
1  Violator Animation (keyable) to reveal logo, and inform what's coming up next.

Distribution:
These animations will be use on the new Ringling TV channel, ART Network.  The looping Line Up slates will be use to present upcoming programs and times.

Oh and here is a logo I designed for ART Network. The school was asking for designs for the network so I submitted something for their consideration.

2. Industry Examples of Network Branding

To start off the research into Network Packaging we took a look into industry examples to get a since of how these work in the world and how we can make these work as inspiration for us. A Network Identity Package is a logo and package of Motion Graphics that evokes the style and feel that a Television Network is all about. It is something that when you see it's ID's or bumpers or anything reminds you of what station you are watching and sometimes even why you are watching that station. A network package can make a station feel fun, exciting, calm, emotional, scary, and new. In my opinion it ties everything that is shown on that channel into one final piece. The shows are the present and the network package is the beautiful box they come in.

SKY ARTS

Formerly ArtWorld, Sky Arts is a television program that delivers art to the UK and Ireland through television in the form of theatrical performances, movies, documentaries, and music. They are located in the UK and are a smaller part of Sky Television. I would think their target demographic is anyone interested in the arts. Their style is very smooth and graphic and filmic all in one. They definitely capture art in all of it's greatest aspects in just a few seconds. I feel they are trying to convey the idea that art is all around us with the way they take objects from around the world that people interact with and have those objects create, literally, ARTS.

NITRO

Nitro is a a television station directed towards male audiences. Like the United States' Spike TV, Nitro is stationed in Spain and sends the same kind of message with it's different line up of shows such as Southland, 24, Third Watch, and Boston Legal. Their style is very simplistic with color scheme of just yellow, black and white, but their movement is very exciting and fun. Though it is mostly in slow motion the movements chosen are very big and in your face.

NITRO BRANDING PACKAGE

SIMILARITIES & DIFFERENCES

I feel that these two networks are different in the aspect of who there target audience is. Sky Arts seems to be more calming and soothing for a more high brow art lovers environment. Nitro on the other hand with it's audio choices, and "explosive" style target more of a male thrill seeker audience. Some of their similarities are that they both have a somewhat graphic style to them that they really embrace. For example, in Sky Arts "Strings" ID they use the colored ribbons that end up creating the ARTS in the logo, which I have really fallen in love with after watching so many times. Nitro uses this same kind of style in one of their ID's where they have very angular black, yellow, and white lines that move across the screen and bring you to the final NITRO logo.

WHAT I WOULD TAKE FROM THIS

I feel that I would mostly be inspired by Sky Arts' Network Package because it is very stylistic and fun and a look that really appeals to me. I would also want to take the energy that Nitro has in it's Network Package to kind of capture that other side of the art world that really does like excitement and in your face action. I feel that I would kind of take the inspiration I get from these two packages and mold them in my own way so that I can get a fun and energetic piece that could really capture a younger audience that is interested in the arts. One thing that I really learned just from doing this research also was how closely related it is to the Show Packages we had just finished. You definitely need to keep a similar look, feel, and style through all of your pieces for the Network Package really feel like a whole.

4. Brainstorming

For class today we were to come up with 50 words or statements that relate to the phrase "The Power of Art." This was a more difficult process than I thought it was going to be. When you start off coming up with different phrases it goes pretty well until you get to about 30, then it starts getting a little hard. Sometimes I felt as if I was repeating myself on some so I had to keep skimming through my statements and seeing if they were all different from one another. When I finished coming up with the 50 statements and words I went through to pick my five favorite to create a concept statement that worked with the idea of "The Power of Art." As I went through them I saw that quite a few of them, while using different words, were similar in content which made it easier to come up with a concept statement that kind of tied all 50 words and statements into one small paragraph.

Concept statement

Your mind is the greatest gift you have. Through abstract style & color, take us through the furthest reaches of your imagination. As we travel through this wonder of imagination we will see ideas born and take flight. Like the butterfly effect, your smallest piece of art can change the world.

5. Storyboards

So for this piece we were to create two storyboards. One hand drawn storyboard just to get a rough sketch idea of what we wanted to do and then a fully rendered Photoshop storyboard to get a sense of the look and style of the animation. I feel like my drawing skills were strong enough to be able to get a sense of the style I wanted, but I also feel that the Photoshop storyboard helped with the colors and lighting and mood that I wanted for this animation. One thing that was tactful was getting a ten second animation translated into 3 frames when we have usually used 6 frames. I can say that it was hard to try and get a good translation but I'm pretty proud of how everything came out.

6. First Pass

Alright, so here is my first pass for the Network ID. I just did the open for now so that I am able to draw from that in order to build my other pieces such as the Line Ups, Violator, and Bug.

There is definitely still a lot of work to be done with this but for now I think I'm pretty happy. I just need to put some things to make the animation look more "pretty".

7. Second Pass

I got everything together for this Second Pass and I think things are coming across pretty well. Had a long night last night trying to make sure everything looks the way I wanted it to look for today and finally down pack the look I was going for.

BUG

I had some trouble uploading the violator, but I promise it will be there for the Final. But I feel like my process is going great, I'm really getting that fun, fairytale look that I've been wanting and I think it really speaks to the ART world with the idea that our imagination is effected by what we surround ourselves with and when we embrace the world around us our art takes birth.
